Ethiopia Uraga Tebe Haro Wato

Bean Details
Farm Notes: We were very excited to receive more great samples from the Uraga region this year, a name that seems to be more and more prevalent over the last couple of years. Part of the reason we didn't see a whole lot of coffee trading with this region-specific name is that before 2018, most coffee exported from Ethiopia went through the government-run Ethiopia Commodities Exchange where it loses specific origin and provenance and likely sold as generic "Sidama Grade 1". All this changed a couple of years ago and now many of the privately run washing stations are now able to export directly. This lot is made up of several small lots from around the small town ("kebele") of Tebe Haro Wato in the Uraga Woreda of the southern Guji Zone. This lot was prepared to Grade 1 standards and it shows in the green and roasted coffee. The altitudes of area farms range from 1900 to a staggering 2300 meters above sea level, with several hundred small holder farmers contributing to this lot. Cupping Notes: Haro Wato is a substantial Uraga coffee with a flavor profile deeply rooted in honeyed sweetness and pectin-sweet, fruit flavors. The sweetness sensed in light roasts is heavily weighted in raw honey smells, the fragrance and aroma hinting at dark clover honey, with accent notes of fig jam and candied citrus to name a few. There's a floral aspect that comes across in aroma and cup flavors, but it's not the typical "jasmine" type notes you expect from Guji. Instead, it's floral fruits that I pick up on like Pink Lady apples for example along with a rue-like, herbal note that both add a perfumed component to the cup. A rock-solid backbone of honey sweetness fills the brewed coffee and leads into top notes of plum, lychee fruit, tangerine and even melon (one of our cup testers wrote "fruit salad"). The fruit flavors don't carry the weight of a dry process per say, and come into focus as the cup cools off a little, moving right on through to the clean-flavored finish. Haro Wato is fairly flexible for Ethiopia in terms of roast recommendations, and I think Full City is fine if you're looking to add bittersweet roast flavors to the mix. Otherwise, keep it light for the cup profile outlined in this review.
